Note: Numerology is not a scientific method and does not predict the future. The material below is one way of reading numbers, offered for reference and reflection. It is not a statement or promise about anyone's personality, health, learning, success or life, including a child's.

The Expression Number is calculated from all the letters of a name, while the Soul Urge Number (Heart's Desire) is calculated only from the vowels. Numerology ties this index to the theme of what people often look for within themselves; it is one way of reading, offered for reference, not a conclusion about your child.

Calculation: vowels only

Pythagorean numerology uses 5 hard vowels: A, E, I, O, U. (Y is always treated as a consonant in MiKiName's system for Vietnamese names - because Y in Vietnamese mainly plays a consonant role, as in "uy", "ay".)

Example "Nguyễn Minh Khôi" → NGUYEN MINH KHOI:

  • Vowels: U, E, I, O, I
  • Values: 3+5+9+6+9 = 32 → 3+2 = 5

→ Soul Urge 5; numerology associates 5 with the themes of freedom, change and adventure.

The Theme Tied to Each Number

NumberAssociated theme
1Independence, leaving a personal mark, not being overshadowed
2Peace, love, connection
3Free self-expression, creativity, recognition
4Stability, safety, lasting legacy
5Freedom, experience, no constraints
6Family love, caring and being cared for
7Deep understanding, reflection, private space
8Material success, power, respect
9Devotion to community, being remembered for something noble

Reading Soul Urge Next to Expression

Numerology often reads these two indices side by side: Expression speaks of how a name presents itself outwardly, while Soul Urge speaks of an inner theme. For example, Expression 8 with Soul Urge 7 is interpreted as a mix of the themes of achievement and a need for reflection. This pairing is for self-observation only, not for predicting your child's career, feelings or real choices.

Vowels and a Name's Soul Urge

Since only vowels count, each name has its own Soul Urge. The vowels are valued A=1, U=3, E=5, O=6, I=9, so the same family name with a different given name (for example "Lan" and "Linh") can give two different Soul Urge numbers.

Note: vowels are also part of the Expression Number (Expression = all letters), so every letter in a name affects the calculation. MiKiName calculates both indices for each name.

Special note for Vietnamese names

Vietnamese names are usually short (1-3 syllables), so Soul Urge swings wildly with just one letter change. Examples:

  • "Lan" → A → Soul Urge 1
  • "Liên" → I, E → Soul Urge 5 (9+5=14→5)
  • "Linh" → I → Soul Urge 9

Same family name "Trần" but switching the given name from "Lan" to "Linh" → the calculated Soul Urge changes from 1 to 9 - two different themes.

Because Vietnamese names are short, a single different syllable changes the calculated Soul Urge. This is arithmetic; it says nothing certain about your child's "heart".
