Note: Numerology is not a scientific method and does not predict the future. The material below is one way of reading numbers, offered for reference and reflection. It is not a statement or promise about anyone's personality, health, learning, success or life, including a child's.
The Life Path is calculated from the birth date and never changes; the Expression Number is calculated from the name. It is an index parents can look at when choosing a name, and it is one way of reading, offered for reference rather than as a prediction about the child.
Calculation
The Expression Number is computed from every letter of the full name. Each letter has a value from 1-9 per the Pythagorean table:
A=1 B=2 C=3 D=4 E=5 F=6 G=7 H=8 I=9
J=1 K=2 L=3 M=4 N=5 O=6 P=7 Q=8 R=9
S=1 T=2 U=3 V=4 W=5 X=6 Y=7 Z=8
Example for the name "Nguyễn Minh Khôi":
After stripping Vietnamese diacritics → NGUYEN MINH KHOI:
- NGUYEN = 5+7+3+7+5+5 = 32 → 5
- MINH = 4+9+5+8 = 26 → 8
- KHOI = 2+8+6+9 = 25 → 7
- Sum: 5+8+7 = 20 → 2
→ This name gives Expression Number 2; numerology associates 2 with the themes of mediation, cooperation and diplomacy.
Technical note: MiKiName follows Hans Decoz's per-word reduction method - reduce each word first, then sum. This matters because it preserves master numbers within individual words.
Meaning of the 9 Numbers in Expression
Numerology associates each Expression Number with a theme, for example:
- 1: Create something new, lead a field, pioneer.
- 2: Bridge between people, mediate conflicts, work in teams.
- 3: Inspire through art, expression, performance.
- 4: Build sustainable systems, preserve tradition.
- 5: Bring change, explore new territory, shake up society.
- 6: Care for family and community, be the "heart" of an organization.
- 7: Research deeply, seek truth, invent in science or philosophy.
- 8: Build business empires, manage power, materialize dreams.
- 9: Serve humanity on a large scale, humanitarian work, idealism.
Life Path vs Expression
This is where parents often get confused:
| Life Path | Expression | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Birth date | Name |
| Changeable? | No | Yes (via naming) |
| Nature | Calculated from the birth date | Calculated from the name |
| Example | LP 5 is tied to the theme of freedom | Expression 3 is tied to the theme of creativity and expression |
Real Name vs Daily Name vs Nickname
A frequent question: "Which name do I use to calculate Expression?" Per Decoz:
- Full name on the birth certificate = the primary Expression.
- Daily name (nickname) = a secondary Expression, if you want to calculate it too.
For Vietnamese parents, use the name on the birth certificate as the main name to calculate; affectionate nicknames are best treated as a secondary reference.
The Role of Expression When Choosing a Name
Expression is calculated from every letter in the name, so it is usually the first index people look at when comparing names. Reasons:
- A name is used every day: Expression is calculated from the full name, so it is often treated as the index that represents the name.
- Expression contains the full meaning of the name: both vowels (Soul) and consonants (Personality).
- Expression feeds derived indices: Maturity = LP + Expression, and Bridge Numbers are also computed via Expression.
How MiKiName Uses Expression When Suggesting Names
Given your child's birth date, MiKiName calculates the indices of each name in its Vietnamese name database and ranks the names by how well they match the Pythagorean table, for parents to use as a reference. The result predicts nothing about your child; you can always choose a name by its meaning, sound and family tradition.
